The Wawa Dam: A Piece of Local History

For a long time, the Wawa Dam has been a part of the local history. Located in the province of Rodriguez Rizal and was created to provide power for Manila, founded in 1909. The dam is also known as Montalban Dam, and it was abandoned in 1968. The dam is now a popular tourist destination and is currently protected as part of the Pamitinan Protected Landscape.

What is the Wawa Dam?

Wawa Dam is a big dam that was constructed to control the Marikina River. It’s situated in a gorge with a height of 360 meters (1,180 feet). This big gravity dam has an arched shape. This abandoned water reservoir once provided the water needs for Manila! It was built in 1909 during the American colonial era and was the only water source until Angat Dam was built in 1968. Metro Manila is in the midst of a water crisis, and people have been clamoring for a solution. One potential solution is the reuse of a dam protected as part of the Pamitinan Protected Landscape.

The Wawa Dam's History

The Sitio Wawa is not just a place of historical and natural beauty. It’s also known for being the location of the Legendary Mountains of Giant Bernardo Carpio. A man saved a village from two mountains in the folkloric story by using his bare hands to stop the collision. The two mountains are now called Mount Pamintinan and Mount Binacayan.

The Wawa Dam in Today's World

The Wawa Dam has been a tourist attraction for several years. Tourists now visit the Wawa Dam to experience a glimpse of the past. Tourists can take a boat ride to view the dam.

How to get to the Wawa Dam

Now you can get from Cubao / SM North / Trinoma to Eastwood Montalban comfortably and affordably. All you need to do is grab a UV Express Van from Cubao and tell the driver to drop you off at Eastwood Ministop. The fare is 50 pesos. Ride a jeep going to Wawa for 8 pesos. Travel time? Around 1.5-2 hours.

I often visit Rizal because of its unique beauty when it comes to nature. From mountains to historic and mysterious places. Because it is close to Manila, it is very easy to get to the place.
