A Close Encounter with Kalibasib: The Tamaraw of Occidental Mindoro
Last updated on October 25th, 2023 at 04:33 pm
2 minutes readIn the heart of Occidental Mindoro, nestled amid the tranquil landscapes of Manoot, Rizal, lies a sanctuary with a mission: to safeguard one of the Philippines’ most endangered and iconic species—the tamaraw (Bubalus mindorensis). The Tamaraw Gene Pool Farm (GPF), established in 1980, originally aimed to serve as a safe haven for tamaraws, offering hope for their population’s revival. However, this endeavor proved to be a formidable challenge. Out of the initial 20 tamaraws captured, only one emerged from the program— “Kalibasib,” lovingly called “Kali,” born on June 24, 1999. Today, Kali stands alone as a symbol of hope and resilience, having lived in solitude since his mother, “Mimi,” passed away in August 2011.
Kali's Story
Kali’s name, derived from “Kalikasan Bagong Sibol,” which translates to “nature newly sprung,” holds deep meaning. Born against all odds, Kali embodies the unwavering vitality of nature. His journey, from being the sole survivor of the breeding program to becoming a beacon of tamaraw conservation, is both inspirational and heartwarming.
Tamaraws are a unique species found nowhere else but in the Philippines, making their preservation of paramount importance. With their numbers dwindling due to habitat loss and hunting, sanctuaries like the Tamaraw GPF are critical for their survival.
An Up-Close Experience
A visit to the Tamaraw GPF offers a remarkable opportunity for an up-close encounter with Kali and a chance to learn about the conservation efforts dedicated to saving this critically endangered species. Situated in Barangay Manoot, Rizal, Occidental Mindoro, the farm welcomes the public and provides educational programs and guided tours.
The committed team at the farm works tirelessly to ensure Kali’s well-being and to raise awareness about the challenges facing this species in the wild. Visitors can observe Kali in his natural habitat and gain insights into the plight of tamaraws.
