If You’re Not Using These Chrome Shortcuts, You’re Doing it Wrong

3 minutes readGoogle Chrome has a lot of powerful features that are hidden behind keyboard shortcuts or mouse clicks. If you’re not using these shortcuts, you’re doing it wrong! If you’re working on the web, this list of Google Chrome keyboard shortcuts can make your life much easier. Don’t waste time navigating to your bookmarks bar or clicking through the tabs at the top of your browser window; just use these shortcuts and save yourself some time and effort! Here are some of our favorite lesser-known Chrome shortcuts to try out today!
Ctrl + Shift + N to open Incognito Mode
Many people who use Google’s Chrome web browser already know about Incognito Mode. It allows you to surf away from a clean slate, with your history and cookies cleared each time you close Incognito Mode. But many users don’t realize there is also a quick way to open Incognito Mode by using Ctrl + Shift + N on a PC or Command + Shift + N on a Mac.
Ctrl + T to open a new tab in the background
When you’re in a hurry and just need to open up a new tab as quickly as possible, skip clicking on that small little icon. Simply use your keyboard shortcut and prepare to be amazed. Plus, opening tabs in this way prevents them from cluttering up your browser once you’ve had a chance to read through all of them—and that way they won’t get in your way when you return back to reading whatever web page you were originally viewing.
Ctrl + Shift + T to reopen closed tab
Need to get back to a web page you’ve previously closed? While you could go back through your history and reopen a tab, there’s an easier way: just hit Ctrl + Shift + T. The page will be right there waiting for you.

Ctrl + 1-8 to switch between tabs
By pressing Ctrl + 1 through Ctrl + 8 , you can switch to each open tab in order. This is helpful if you have a lot of tabs open and want to switch between them quickly. Pressing Ctrl + 9 brings you back to your most recently used tab; you can use Ctrl + Shift + T to reopen your last closed tab.
Ctrl + Tab switches to next opened tab from left-to-right
If you have many tabs open, you can use Ctrl + Tab to quickly navigate through them. For example, if I have 10 tabs open and use Ctrl + Tab , it will go back to tab #1. TIP: Hold down Ctrl and repeatedly press Tab until you get to your desired tab. If you hold down Shift with Ctrl + Tab , then it will switch from right-to-left instead of left-to-right.
Ctrl + F to find certain keyword
Ctrl + F is a commonly used shortcut that lets you search for text in your current page. Just hit Ctrl + F and start typing in what you’re looking for. When you’ve found what you want, hit Enter to select and copy it.
Ctrl + J to open Downloads
If you’re going to download files from websites often or need to open downloads quickly and easily, then you should use Ctrl + J. It opens up your Downloads folder right away so you can get right to what you need.
Ctrl + W to close Current Tab
Did you know that you can immediately close a tab by pressing Ctrl+W? It’s much faster than using your mouse or touchpad to click x. I use Ctrl+W quite often and I suggest you do too.
Ctrl + Shift + I to opern Developer Tools
In a rush to get your work done? Developer Tools allow you to view and change HTML and CSS in real time. This is a must-have tool for anyone who needs to troubleshoot web code. Seriously, how many times have you tried opening up your browser’s inspector only to be taken back by all of those complicated (and difficult-to-remember) keyboard shortcuts? Now developers can save time by quickly switching between different tools using Ctrl + Shift + I.
Ctrl + H to open Browing History
This is one of my favorite keyboard shortcuts. Whether you want to search a specific page or revisit an old favorite or even see how long ago a page was last visited, Ctrl+H (or Cmd+Shift+H on Mac) will help you do that in one click. Plus, with Google Instant enabled on many sites (including Gmail), your history search results are available instantly as you type—just press Ctrl+H to start typing and get instant suggestions. Nice!
Chrome is a powerful browser, and anyone who uses it knows that. Through these shortcuts, you can make your browsing experience an absolute blast. The next time you’re on the web and get frustrated with how slow or irritating the process is, just remember – there could always be a shortcut to help you out!
